Restaurant Review: Pepe’s Pizza delivers dollops of delight [4/5]

Pizza joints have been mushrooming up all over Bengaluru, like other eateries serving popular foodstuff, like biryani. And in both cases, only the better ones persist, while others shut shop within six months of opening.

Pepe’s Pizza in Bellandur falls in the former category, serving some pizza and starters that can send you into a food coma. Obviously, this is not gourmet pizza, but visit the place if you have a pizza craving and want something filling.

Drinks

Now, Pepe’s Pizza, like most pizzerias, is a non-alcoholic establishment. I chose to pair my impending cheese overload with a Virgin Mojito. It did complement the creamy spread with its tang, and was a nice cooler for the hot day.

Starters

I will not consider a pizza as a starter, as I have mentioned in my previous blog posts. Therefore, here is a quick round-up of the other things I and three others — invited for a tasting — ate.

First up were some Cheese Tacos. These were mouth-wateringly good, and a good test of how much you like cheese and how much cheese you like!

Next, some Cheesy Garlic Bread. Order a plate and it is enough to serve and satiate a party of four! However, make sure you finish them while they are warm and fresh. Isn’t that the point, after all?

Then, some Butter Garlic Twisties with Cheesy Dip. Smelling exactly like the name, these were the kind of delight you crave when its raining outside and you bake something because you want your home to smell delicious!

And finally, on the starters side, we had Chicken Wings with Peri Peri Sauce. Now, ordering chicken wings in a pizza joint may not be considered kosher by many — especially pizza puritans. However, these are great if you want to keep children busy or if you feel there’s an overdose of everything cheesy.

Pizzas

Pepe’s manages to serve pizzas of various sizes, and some of them are novelties. One such is the So Cheesy Pizza — a pie with several kinds of cheese. This is exactly the kind of cheesy overload I was talking about.

The second was the You Will Cry Pizza — one that claims to get your tear glands flowing with the chillies and spices it incorporates. A good order of you are feeling a little adventurous or want a little more tingle on your tongue.

The final pizza I had was actually a slice. This was the Pepe’s Secret Non Veg Pizza Slice. As the name suggests, this one slice has a special sauce that makes it a little more savoury, and sets it that little bit apart from regular pizzas.

Dessert

In the end, if you think you have had a little too much of cheese, herbs and bread, order some dessert. We did, and ended up with some Choco Brownie with Ice Cream and Choco Lava Cake. The brownie with the ice cream was welcome, but Pepe’s Pizza’s take on the lava cake was unconventional, to say the least.

Final thoughts about Pepe’s Pizza

Depending on how much and what kind of pizza you like, Pepe’s Pizza will either be right on top or just a notch lower on the totem pole of pizzerias.

In my opinion, Pepe’s Pizza still has some room for improvement, but is already easily one of the better pizza places in Bengaluru.
